A Newtown man who called police in March to report vandalism to his car, has now been arrested for making the pipe bombs found at the scene. Newtown Police arrested 67-year old Larry Bailey today for possession of explosives, manufacturing bombs, reckless endangerment and making a false statement.
Officers arrived at his South Main Street home on March 24th and found two objects that appeared to be pipe bombs. The area was evacuated and the State Police bomb squad was called in.
An investigation determined that the objects could cause a public safety hazard. They were removed to a safe location so the FBI could destroy the pipe bombs. An FBI Bomb Technician examined the items and determined them to be improvised explosive devices.
The casings were sent to the FBI Laboratory for further analysis.
During a search of Bailey's home, a number of suspicious items were found. The investigation determined that Bailey was the likely bomb maker.
He was held on bond for arraignment.
