Southington fire death ruled a homicide

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (AP) The Chief Medical Examiner's Office has ruled the death of a 19-year-old woman in a Southington apartment fire a homicide.

The agency said Monday that Kristen Milano died of smoke inhalation. She was found in a second-floor bedroom after a fire early Sunday morning at the Summer Brook Apartments, while two relatives were able to escape.

Neither the medical examiner's office nor police would say why Milano's death is considered a homicide.

The cause of the blaze remains under investigation. Police declined to comment on witness reports saying the fire may have been started by someone who threw a firecracker as a prank.

No arrests have been announced.
