Man sentenced to 50 years for murder outside bar

MILFORD, Conn. (AP) An Ansonia man has been sentenced to 50 years in prison for a fatal shooting outside a bar in Derby that authorities say was related to a gang dispute.

Twenty-six-year-old Cordaryl Silva was sentenced Tuesday in Milford Superior Court for the killing of 22-year-old Javon Zimmerman. A jury convicted Silva of murder in April.

Silva shot Zimmerman outside R.J.'s Cafe in Derby in May 2012.

Silva's lawyers argued that Silva feared for his life because Zimmerman's family is part of a drug gang and was responsible for three shootings including two killings.

Silva asked Superior Court Judge Denise Markle to impose the maximum sentence, saying he believes his conviction will be overturned on appeal.

Markle said she hoped the sentence would deter others from seeking vigilante justice.
