Interstate 84 to close in Southington for weekend

SOUTHINGTON, Conn. (AP) Interstate 84 is scheduled to be closed all weekend in both directions in Southington as officials replace two highway bridges.

The state Department of Transportation says the Interstate will be closed between 9 p.m. Friday and 5 a.m. on Monday as crews move the 2-million pound bridges into place over Marion Avenue in both the westbound and eastbound lanes.

Construction crews used a technique called accelerated bridge construction, or ABC, building the three-lane bridges next to the highway to minimize the disruption to traffic. They will use special self-propelled transport units to lift and move the bridges into place.

The existing bridges were built in 1963 and about 82,000 vehicles cross them daily.

The state decided to replace them after finding some cracks and exposed reinforcement.
