Prosecutor: Trooper justified in shooting

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) A state trooper has been cleared of any wrongdoing in the fatal shooting of a Salem man who had just set fire to his own home.

New London State's Attorney Michael Regan released his report Tuesday on the June 2013 shooting of Robert Bergeson by Trooper Patrick Hawes.

The Day of New London reports the prosecutor found that Hawes reasonably believed his life was in danger when the 59-year-old Bergeson began charging at him with something in his hand.

The item turned out to be a piece of wood. Hawes shot Bergeson three times.

Police say Bergeson had just been released from prison after serving 30-days for harassment and had told his ex-wife he would burn down the house so she could not get it in their divorce settlement.
