Feds OK higher water temperature for Millstone

WATERFORD, Conn. (AP) Connecticut's nuclear power plant has won permission to use warmer water from Long Island Sound for cooling at the second of its two units.

The Nuclear Regulatory Commission announced the new rules for the Millstone 3 nuclear power plant in Waterford on Monday. The agency approved a similar request for the Millstone 2 unit in April.

The approval allows an increase in the water temperature limit to 80 degrees Fahrenheit, from 75 degrees.

Millstone 2 shut for nearly two weeks in August 2012 because the water was warmer than the limit.

Water is used to cool key components of the plant and is discharged back into the Sound.

A spokesman for the plant, owned by Dominion Resources Inc., said Millstone has not had to exceed the temperature limit this year.
