Suspect in police shooting pleads no contest

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) A Deep River man has pleaded no contest to charges stemming from a shootout that left an alleged accomplice dead and a state trooper wounded.

The Middletown Press reports that 26-year-old Sebastian Award faces up to 13 years in prison after entering a plea deal on Tuesday in Middlesex Superior Court.

Award, who had been charged with 13 felonies, pleaded no contest to assault, conspiracy to commit robbery and engaging police in pursuit.

State police say Award and 24-year-old Jonathan Alvarado of Deep River robbed a motel in Old Saybrook on April 8, 2013 and led police on a chase into Westbrook that ended with a crash and shootout.

Award and State police Detective Scott Wisner were wounded. Alvarado, who fired the shots at police, was killed.
