Director charged in theft from Hartford nonprofit

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) A woman who ran a now-defunct community nonprofit in Hartford has been charged with stealing $205,000 from the agency.

The Chief State's Attorney's office announced Friday that Karen Lewis of Windsor has been charged with larceny. She was released after posting a $150,000 bond and is due in court on July 28.

Prosecutors say the 57-year-old stole the money using a debit card from the South Arsenal Neighborhood Development Corporation, then tried to disguise the thefts as loans.

SAND operated economic and community development programs in Hartford's North End before being dissolved at the end of 2010. Lewis had resigned a year earlier.

She did not immediately respond Friday to a telephone message seeking comment.
