Stonington state senator seriously injured in fall

STONINGTON, Conn. (AP) A state senator from Stonington is in serious condition at a Rhode Island hospital after falling from an outside staircase at his home.

Stonington Police told The Day of New London newspaper that a neighbor witnessed 52-year-old Andrew Maynard fall from a ``significant height,'' landing on a sidewalk. The incident happened at about 2:39 a.m. on Monday morning.

While the fall appears to have been an accident, police said the matter remains under investigation.

Maynard, the Democratic co-chairman of the General Assembly's Transportation Committee, received public, bipartisan well-wishes from Senate leaders as well as Gov. Dannel P. Malloy, Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and U.S. Rep. Joe Courtney.

Besides Stonington, Maynard's district includes Griswold, Groton, North Stonington, Plainfield, Preston, Sterling and Voluntown.

Several sources said Maynard was in a coma Monday.
