New London mayor suspends police chief

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) New London's mayor has suspended the police chief, a day after she filed an injunction seeking to block him from interfering with her job.

Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio on Thursday put Police Chief Margaret Ackley on paid leave pending the outcome of an independent investigation into her conduct.

Deputy Chief Peter Reichard was named acting chief.

Among other thing, Finizio accuses Ackley of trying to undermine contract negotiations with the police union, misrepresenting financial information about the department to the media and deliberately failing to assign officers to Ocean Beach Park on the July Fourth weekend to make a budgetary point.

Ackley asked for a preliminary injunction Wednesday that would bar the mayor from interfering with her duties, until a lawsuit she filed in 2013 over her compensation is adjudicated.
