Ex Hartford detective spared prison for theft

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) A former Hartford police detective has been spared prison for stealing nearly $30,000 in gun permit fees.

The U.S. Attorney's office says 40-year-old Tishay Johnson of Windsor was sentenced Monday in federal court in Hartford to six months home confinement. Johnson, who pleaded guilty in May to theft, also was ordered to perform 300 hours of community service and make full restitution.

Prosecutors say Johnson administered the Hartford Police Department's concealed weapons permit program. Authorities say between October 2009 and January 2014, Johnson embezzled $29,426 that had been paid in connection with permit applications by altering checks and money orders to make it appear that the checks and money orders were payable to him.

He resigned from the police department in January and says he's being treated for gambling addiction.
