Connecticut issues 1,800 licenses under immigrant program

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) The state issued more than 1,800 drivers licenses in the first three months of a program that allows people living in the state illegally to obtain driving privileges.

The Republican-American reports the program has also resulted in 9,100 learners' permits and the department has scheduled nearly 46,000 appointments for testing.

The legislature's budget office included the numbers in its analysis of a DMV request to shift funding within its budget to complete the program.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy signed the law two years ago, but it did not go into effect until Jan. 1. It permits individuals living in Connecticut to obtain drivers' licenses without having to provide legal documentation of their immigrant status.
