Police: 12-year-old dies after falling into Naugatuck River

NAUGATUCK, Conn. (AP) Police say a 12-year old girl has died after she fell into the Naugatuck River.

Rescuers spent nearly two hours searching for Jada Ivory, who lost her balance and slipped into the water around 4:30 p.m. Monday.

Ivory was perched on a rock with some friends at Linden Park when she fell. Police say no adults were with the children.

Officials say rescuers pulled Ivory from the water about a half-mile from where she fell in. She was taken by ambulance to a hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Karen Smith, Ivory's grandmother, says Ivory had only been swimming for about a year.

It's unclear how long she was underwater before emergency personnel were called to the scene.
