Malloy wants lawmakers to pass transportation lockbox bill

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) — Connecticut Gov. Dannel P. Malloy says he wants lawmakers to pass his version of legislation that would ensure transportation revenues are spent only on transportation projects.

With the General Assembly set to adjourn in three and a half weeks, the Democratic governor told The Associated Press that he thinks it's time to resolve the issue and pass his so-called "lockbox" bill, which is awaiting action in the House of Representatives.

A similar bill awaits action in the Senate. But that legislation includes an escape clause allowing the legislature, by a three-fifths vote in each chamber, to use Special Transportation Fund money in an emergency.

Rep. Tony Guerrera, co-chairman of the Transportation Committee, says he supports Malloy's bill and plans to call it up for a vote in the House soon.
