Former Connecticut trooper sentenced to 12 .5 years for arson

MIDDLETOWN, Conn. (AP) A former Connecticut state trooper was sentenced to 12 .5 years in prison in the October 2014 arson of his brother's Haddam home.

Judge David Gold also handed Ronald Carlson two five-year sentences for burglary and criminal mischief, which will run concurrently with the arson sentence.

Police say Carlson was upset over a disputed $2.3 million family inheritance and had been planning the arson for seven years.

Tom Carlson said in court Tuesday he will never forget the face of the ``man I shared a childhood bedroom with'' charging up his driveway as flames ripped through his Candlewood Hill Road home.

Carlson, who defended himself, said his actions were not logical, but acts of vengeance.

Judge Gold told Carlson his life had been a ``miserable failure'' before sentencing.
