HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) The state Supreme Court has ruled a judge was within her rights to bar testimony about the unreliability of eyewitnesses from a robbery trial.

Attorneys for Stanley Williams wanted to present testimony from a memory expert during his 2010 trial to support Williams' defense that he was misidentified as the suspect in the robberies of a Waterbury liquor store and clothing outlet in 2009.

But Superior Court Judge Juliett Crawford ruled that because one of the witnesses had recognized Williams as a regular customer, the testimony would not be relevant.

The high court, in a 6-1 decision on Monday, ruled the judge acted properly and had a right to use broad discretion in deciding what evidence is not relevant or would not be significantly helpful to the jury.
