Report: firefighter killed in blaze got stuck on furniture

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) A new report says a Hartford firefighter killed in a house blaze last October became entangled in furniture and couldn't get out of the building, while firefighters did not hear a lieutenant's mayday call.

The report released Friday by the fire department's Board of Inquiry also said there was a failure to search the room where firefighter Kevin Bell was trapped.

Bell was the first city firefighter in 40 years to die in the line of duty. The medical examiner's office concluded he died because his tank ran out of air. Three other firefighters were injured in the blaze on Blue Hills Avenue.

Fire officials said Friday that they have addressed the mayday call problem.

State police and federal workplace safety officials are still investigating the fire.
