Ex-payroll manager pleads guilty to software firm theft

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Federal prosecutors say a former software company payroll manager has pleaded guilty to fraud charges related to her theft of nearly $1.7 million from a software firm.

Authorities say Penny Roy pleaded guilty Friday in federal court in New Haven to tax and wire fraud charges. Court documents and testimony say the 44-year-old Wethersfield resident used her job as payroll manager to insert her own bank account information into the profiles of other employees.

The U.S. attorney's office says Roy processed fraudulent expense reimbursements and payroll payments in the other employees' names, with the payments made to her bank account. She was fired after the company discovered fake expense reimbursements she processed in her name.

She's faces up to 23 years in prison at sentencing Nov. 17.
