Firefighter identified as victim in fatal motorcycle crash

NORWICH, Conn. (AP) Police have identified a Norwich volunteer firefighter as the victim in a fatal motorcycle accident in southeastern Connecticut.

Ledyard Police tell The Day of New London that 37-year-old Eric Retherford was killed Monday evening after his 2010 Harley Davidson crossed the double yellow centerline and hit a Honda CRV head-on on Route 117. Police say he was not wearing a helmet. He was found unresponsive by emergency medical personnel.

The accident is under investigation.

Retherford had been a member of the Laurel Hill Volunteer Fire Department for seven years. Firefighters and family members gathered at the department Tuesday evening to comfort his family.

Members hung black bunting over doors and the department's flag was lowered to half-staff.
