Baby born on highway when man gets stuck in traffic

NORWALK, Conn. (AP) State police say paramedics and two troopers delivered a baby boy on the side of a highway in Norwalk.

Ricardo Vilfranche was driving a Toyota Prius on Interstate 95 Thursday morning during rush hour trying to take his pregnant wife to Stamford Hospital. But she went into labor with contractions that were three minutes apart. At about 7:50 a.m. Ricardo told a dispatcher he was stuck in traffic and that his wife was in labor and in pain.

Two troopers and a Norwalk police officer laid her down on a blanket on the side of the highway.

The baby crowned and the troopers started to deliver the boy when Norwalk Fire and EMS arrived. A paramedic finished delivering him about 90 seconds after rushing her into the ambulance.
