SHELTON, Conn. (AP) An attorney has entered a not guilty plea for a 57-year-old Connecticut teacher accused of taking a 17-year-old student out to dinner and trying to kiss her on the lips.

WFSB-TV reports George Perduta, a former Shelton High School math teacher, faced a judge Tuesday morning on a charge of disorderly conduct.

Police say he and the female student went out to dinner in April and he asked her about her relationship status, which made her uncomfortable. The girl said Perduta tried to kiss her after dinner.

Shelton school officials say he resigned from his job in May and from his position on the Berlin Board of Education.

Defense attorney Diane Polan called the arrest a ``tremendous waste of judicial resources.''

He is due back in court in November.
