Cops: Brick falls off building, injures construction worker

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) Police say a construction worker is in critical condition after he was hit by a brick that fell from a former office supply building in Hartford.

Deputy Police Chief Brian Foley says the worker was taken to Hartford Hospital on Wednesday for treatment.

Crews were called to the Hartford Office Supply Company building around 11:30 a.m. Firefighters say the worker was found lying unconscious on the ground.

Officials with The Maggiore Cos., which is renovating the building into apartment units, say the brick fell from the parapet of the four-story building and cracked the worker's hard hat. It is unclear how the brick became dislodged. They say work on the $36 million rental conversion is expected to resume Thursday.

Detectives and Occupational Safety and Health Administration officials are investigating.
