Connecticut dentist gets probation in patient death case

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) A Connecticut dentist has been granted a probation program and agreed to give up his license in connection with the death of a patient who became unresponsive while 20 teeth were pulled and implants installed last year.

A state judge in Hartford granted accelerated rehabilitation Friday to 46-year-old Rashmi Patel of Suffield, who has offices in Enfield and Torrington. The program allows charges to be erased after probation is completed.

Patel was charged with misdemeanor negligent homicide in the February 2014 death of 64-year-old Judith Gan of Ellington.

State regulators suspended Patel's license, saying he failed to adequately respond when Gan's oxygen levels dropped dangerously low while under conscious sedation. She died at a hospital.

Patel apologized to Gan's family Friday. Gan's daughter said she forgives him.
