Ex-probation officer gets prison time for accepting bribe

STAMFORD, Conn. (AP) - A former Connecticut probation officer who pleaded guilty to taking a bribe is headed to prison.

The Chief State's Attorney's office says 38-year-old Alphah East of Meriden was sentenced Tuesday in Stamford to 18 months in prison.

Officials say the former Norwalk officer pleaded guilty in March to accepting a $5,000 check from the father of a woman he was supervising. They say he promised to get her probation terminated in exchange for the money.

Officials say the father had already given East $13,500 before the incident and had complained to the Chief State's Attorney.

East's attorney says his client became a drug addict after he was prescribed pain medication for a back injury in 2008. East was arrested in 2010.
