Police ID worker hit, killed by backhoe at construction site

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - Police have identified a construction worker who was killed after being struck by a backhoe at a construction site in New Haven.

Authorities say crews from West Haven-based Pereira Sons Construction were working on a sewer line on Boston Post Road along the West Haven border Tuesday afternoon when 56-year-old Donald "Cary" Smith was hit by the equipment.

The Bethany man was taken to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed Wednesday morning. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner says the cause of death was blunt trauma of the head, torso and lower left extremity.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration is investigating the incident.
