WEST HAVEN, Conn. (AP) Police say a couple trying to escape a storm was injured after lightning hit a nearby tree at a West Haven beach.

Officials say the couple was walking on Oak Grove Field Thursday when they got caught in the rain. The man and woman received an energy transfer when they walked by the tree that was struck.

Police say the victims were taken to the hospital and are in stable condition. They weren't immediately identified.
