Man charged in heroin overdose death of 18-year-old man

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man is facing federal charges after authorities say he distributed heroin connected to the overdose death of an 18-year-old man.

Connecticut U.S. Attorney Deirdre Daly says Kerry Scanlan, of Avon, was arrested Tuesday. A federal magistrate in New Haven ordered Scanlan detained.

Daly says the 20-year-old Scanlan was charged as a result of an ongoing statewide initiative targeting narcotics dealers who distribute heroin, fentanyl or opioids that cause death or serious injury.

Prosecutors say state police responded to a home in East Haddam on March 19 for a report of an "untimely death." The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

An investigation revealed that the victim drove Scanlan to Hartford to purchase the heroin.

It's unclear whether Scanlan has a lawyer who could comment on the charges.
