UConn freshman class most diverse in school's history

STORRS, Conn. (AP) - The University of Connecticut's incoming freshman class is the most diverse in school history.

UConn released its annual enrollment figures Tuesday morning.

The freshman class includes 5,100 students, 3,800 of whom will attend the main campus in Storrs. A record 37 percent of those come from minority backgrounds.

The percentage of minority students continues an upward trend from 14 percent in 1996, with the biggest growth coming in the school's Hispanic population.

The freshman class also is among the most accomplished in school history with 181 valedictorians or salutatorians, up from 42 students 20 years ago.

Classes begin next Monday.
