Man gets 30 years in prison for beating death of 3-year-old

DANIELSON, Conn. (AP) A Connecticut man convicted in the 2013 beating death of a 3-year-old girl has been sentenced to 30 years in prison.

Carroll Bumgarner-Ramos, of Willimantic, was sentenced Wednesday by Danielson Superior Court Judge Patricia Swords.

The 32-year-old Bumgarner-Ramos was convicted in May of first-degree manslaughter, first-degree assault and related crimes in the death of Nevaeh Lam on June 27, 2013.

Bumgarner-Ramos told police Nevaeh was in his care the afternoon of her death but has maintained he didn't cause her injuries. Prosecutors say the toddler's mother came home to find Nevaeh covered in bruises and surrounded by her own vomit.

Autopsy results showed Nevaeh died from repeated jabs to her abdomen that crushed her intestines against her spine.

Prosecutors say Bumgarner-Ramos was angry that the child's crying kept him awake.
