Connecticut man gets 2 years in prison for fatal punch

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) - A New Haven man has been sentenced to two years in prison for his role in a fistfight that left another man dead.

The New Haven Register reports that Kelly Mack was sentenced Wednesday. He previously pleaded guilty to charges including criminally negligent homicide in connection with the fight in August 2015 that left 51-year-old Manuel Vega-Ruiz dead of a head injury sustained when he hit the ground.

The 44-year-old Mack had been charged with manslaughter but accepted a plea deal on the lesser charge.

Prosecutors say Mack became angry when he found the victim and another man smoking crack on his front porch.

The prosecution said Mack "sucker punched" the victim, while the defense said Vega-Ruiz and the other man were the aggressors and Mack simply defended himself.
