BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) - A Bridgeport man accused of fatally shooting a construction worker shortly after inquiring about a job at a work site near his home has waived his right to a jury trial.

The Connecticut Post reports Assistant Public Defender Bradford Buchta told Judge Robert Devlin Tuesday that his client, Gregory Weathers, intends to claim the insanity defense.

Devlin continued the case, which will be heard by a three-judge panel in November.

Police say Weathers thought he had been rejected by the foreman of a Burns Construction job when he opened fire at the work site on Chopsey Hill Road in March 2015. Thirty-one-year-old Jose Araujo was struck several times and died at an area hospital.

Weathers has been charged with murder, criminal possession of a firearm and other weapons offenses.
