Man who lunged at officer with knife gets probation

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - A Connecticut man who was shot and injured by a police officer in 2015 after lunging at the officer with a knife has been sentenced to two years of probation.

The Hartford Courant reports 23-year-old Tyrinde Thompson pleaded under the Alford doctrine Tuesday to attempted third-degree assault, reckless endangerment and related crimes. Under the doctrine, a defendant doesn't admit guilt but acknowledges there's enough evidence for a conviction.

Hartford police responded to Thompson's mother's home on June 9, 2015, after the woman reported that her son was having a schizophrenic episode.

Thompson fled when police arrived. Officers chased him to a nearby driveway, where Thompson lunged at Officer Tyrell Jenkins with one of three knives he was carrying. Jenkins fired three times at Thompson, striking him twice.
