Police cracking down on illegal dirt bike and ATV riders

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Police in Hartford say they have been cracking down on illegal dirt bike and all-terrain vehicle use in Connecticut's capital city ahead of a new stricter state law.

Deputy Chief Brian Foley says Hartford police's Traffic Division teamed up with the Newington Police Department on Sunday to focus on nuisance riders. A total of four unregistered dirt bikes, one stolen dirt bike, one ATV and one scooter were seized by law enforcement.

Police also arrested two riders and issued summons to four people. The names of the offenders weren't made available.

The bill, signed in June by Gov. Dannel Malloy, allows municipalities that adopt ordinances against operating dirt bikes and ATVs on public property to issue monetary penalties for violators. The new legislation goes into effect on Saturday.
