New Britain officers suspended over high-speed pursuit

NEW BRITAIN, Conn. (AP) - Two New Britain police officers were suspended without pay following a months-long investigation into a high-speed chase with a drug suspect under surveillance by federal authorities.

Chief James Wardwell suspended Officer Brian Shea for 25 days and Officer Brian Solek for two days in September according to an Internal Affairs report released Thursday.

Police say the officers initiated the April 18 chase by attempting to pull over a man minutes after he allegedly arranged to pick up fentanyl from the main suspect of the federal investigation.

Wardwell said the officers knew of the federal probe and "directly jeopardized the integrity of the investigation."

He also said Shea violated department policy and endangered public safety by chasing the man at speeds of up to 84 mph.

The police union declined comment.
