Veterans' meal prep program to be offered at Rocky Hill site

HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut's Department of Veterans Affairs is teaming up with a Chester-based nonprofit group to help veterans and their families with meal preparation.

Braveminds assists caregivers of veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury and PTSD. The group will hold its Caregivers Kitchen program at the agency's Rocky Hill campus.

Participants learn how to cook a meal together. They're later sent home with a packet of recipes and ideas for faster ways to prepare meals.

Dr. Kara Gagnon is founder of Braveminds. She says the Caregiver Kitchens allow "healing to happen through the preparation of meals and gathering families together."

The goal is hold the events monthly. The next one is scheduled for Dec. 11 at the Commandants House.

About six or seven military families are expected to participate.
