HARTFORD, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut's Department of Agriculture is hoping to clear up confusion about a relatively new law that attempts to ensure that fruits and vegetables advertised as being grown in Connecticut actually were grown in the state.

Officials say compliance among farmers was erratic over the summer, the first full season for the Connecticut Grown labeling requirements.

Inspectors issued nearly 50 warnings to growers and vendors at farmers' markets who failed to post signs identifying the name and address of the farm where the produce originated. In some cases, the products were grown at a Connecticut farm other than the one selling them.

George Krivda, the agency's chief of staff, says the agency decided it still needs to provide more education to farmers to ensure everyone abides by the same rules.
