Connecticut city closer to getting body cameras for police

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) A Connecticut city has adopted a resolution that brings it closer to getting body cameras for its police officers.

New Haven officials say the Board of Alders voted unanimously Monday night to authorize Mayor Toni Harp to apply for a $700,000 grant from the state Department of Public Service to purchase the cameras.

The plan calls for more than 450 officers on the force to be outfitted with the body cameras. The cameras cost just over $650,000.

Chief Anthony Campbell told The New Haven Register there would be instances where officers would be allowed to turn off the cameras.

Campbell says video cannot be deleted or altered once it's been shot.

He says officers could be equipped with the cameras as early as the fall.
