Justice Scalia addresses Coast Guard cadets

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia is urging cadets at the Coast Guard Academy to have affection and respect for the Constitution as they prepare for military service.

Scalia delivered an address Tuesday evening to a packed auditorium at the academy in New London.

He says there was great respect for the Constitution once upon a time and the same attachment ought to exist today. He told the cadets it ``deserves your affection and your oath.''

He says it's the Constitution more than any political leader that makes the country whole and most Americans do not appreciate how different it is in structure from the founding documents of other governments.

The 78-year-old Scalia was appointed to the nation's highest court in 1986 and is currently its longest-serving justice.
