Cops: Bridgeport man killed girlfriend, overdosed

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) Bridgeport police say a city man stabbed his girlfriend to death because he believed she was cheating on him and then tried to kill himself with drug overdose.

Authorities say 37-year-old Alejandro Velez is in critical but stable condition at Bridgeport Hospital and will face a murder charge in the killing on Saturday night. It's the city's first homicide of the year.

The victim hasn't been identified.

Velez's sister called police Saturday night to report that her brother was unresponsive and barricaded in their mother's apartment. Officers found Velez unconscious and his girlfriend on a bathroom floor suffering from stab wounds. His mother was in Florida at the time.

Authorities expect to set Velez's bail at $1 million. He has a criminal record that includes drug convictions.
