Man gets 10 years in prison for Conn. fatal crash

WATERBURY, Conn. (AP) A New Haven man has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a fatal wrong-way crash on Route 8 in Naugatuck.

A Waterbury Superior Court judge on Thursday sentenced 34-year-old Edmundo Mendieta, who authorities say was drunk when he drove his van northbound in the southbound lanes and crashed into a car in April 2012.

The wreck killed 24-year-old William Baer Jr. of Beacon Falls and seriously wounded a passenger in his car, Sara Chmielewski of Stratford.

Police say Mendieta's blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit for driving. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter, assault with a motor vehicle and driving under the influence.

The Republican-American of Waterbury reports that Judge Roland Fasano said it was an injustice that Mendieta survived the deadly mayhem he created.
