Conn. jail guard convicted of assaulting inmate

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) A jury has convicted a state correctional officer of misdemeanor assault for beating an inmate in front of other guards and prisoners two years ago at the New Haven Correctional Center.

Thirty-seven-year-old Diaab Amin of North Branford is set to be sentenced May 23 to up to one year in prison on the third-degree assault conviction. The New Haven Register reports the Department of Correction also fired Amin.

Jurors in New Haven Superior Court deliberated for less than an hour before finding Amin guilty.

A state police investigation found that Amin in July 2012 sucker-punched and beat 33-year-old William Laden, who was jailed for a domestic assault. Troopers say four months before the assault, Laden punched Amin in a parking lot fight in Meriden in an alleged drug dispute.
