Man gets 70 years in prison for `depraved' murder

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) A 25-year-old West Haven man has been sentenced to 70 years in prison for killing another man in front of his family in New Haven.

New Haven Superior Court Judge Elpedio Vitale imposed the prison time Thursday on Derrick Bouknight in the shooting death of 27-year-old William Baines IV in October 2010. A jury convicted Bouknight of murder and weapons charges in January.

Baines was shot as he sat on a porch with relatives. Prosecutors say Bouknight was upset because Baines had fought with his friend over a $100 debt.

The New Haven Register reports that Bouknight apologized to Baines' family during the sentencing, after distraught relatives of the victim read emotional statements.

The judge said the ``chilling callousness'' of the shooting was ``stunning in its depravity.''
