Two men washed out into Long Island South at the Penfield Lighthouse by high tide this week were from Brewster.  The men, both in their 40s, told emergency responders that they drove to Fairfield to fish, wade out on the reef Wednesday night and a riptide pulled them into the water.  One man was rescued early Thursday morning and he told them that the fog separated him from his acquaintance.  The U.S. Coast Guard took over the search.  The other man was determined to be back in Brewster, telling police that he was able to swim back to shore.  Fairfield Police are now investigating why the second man didn't call 911 about his companion.  The men's names have not been released.  The Lighthouse is a mile from the shore and about a quarter mile from the submerged reef.  The investigation is ongoing.
