CT Driving Laws




       New Teen Driving Laws for 16 and 17 Year-Olds 

                       Effective August 1, 2008 

     
**Attention all 16 and 17-year-old Teenage Drivers**

Effective on August 1, 2008, 16 and 17-year-old Drivers will now get a suspended drivers liscense for the following:

- Violating any Teen Driving Restriction Driving Restriction
- Speeding 
- Reckless Driving 
- Street racing 
- Using a Cell Phone or Text Messaging Device While Driving


               
Stop Using Cell Phones While Driving!!

1st Offense = 30-Day Suspension, $125 license restoration fee plus court fines
2nd Offense = 90-Day Suspension, $125 license restoration fee plus court fines 
3rd Offense = 6-Month Suspension, $125 license restoration fee plus court fines


Learner’s Permit Holders Who Obtain a Permit On Or After August 1, 2008 must have:
- Knowledge Test of 25-questions
- Training Requirements of 40 hours of behind-the-wheel experience 
- 8 hours of Safe Driving Course
- Parents must complete a 2 hour class with the permit holder 
- The permit holder may not have any passengers except for a driving instructor, a parent, or a person of age 20 who has had a driver's license for at least 4 years

Restricted 16- and 17-Year-Old Drivers who Receive a Driver’s License On Or After August 1, 2008 must have:
- A Curfew of 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. (except for jobs, school, religious activities, or medical reasons
- In the first 6 months, the driver may not have any passengers
in the vehicle except for, a licensed driving instructor giving instruction, a parent, or a person with a valid driver's license for at least four years
- In the Second 6 months, immediate family members are permitted in the car

 
       Drinking and Driving Must Be Taken Seriously 
- License Suspension for a 16- or 17-year-old driving Under the Influence of Alcohol will be At Least 1 year with the Blood Alcohol Content 
Equal to or Over .02
- If the Driver Refuses the Test, Suspension will be 18 Months
