Elderly Man Assaults Officer

82-year old Bethel man leads police ion chase, punches officer

Traffic is what eventually stopped a police chase in Bethel Wednesday afternoon that led to an elderly man assaulting an officer.

Police say an 82-year old town resident was told not to drive because he had a suspended license.

Werner Schultz ignored the police order and drove home around 4:30 Wednesday, with police giving chase.  When traffic forced him to stop and an officer approached, he slammed the car door on the officer's hand.  He then punched the officer in the face.

Schultz was charged with assaulting an officer, interfering with an officer, engaging police in a pursuit and driving on a suspended license.

He was held on $2,500 bond.
