SHARON, Conn. (AP) - Connecticut state officials are collaborating with conservationists on a new effort to protect local bird species.

Five sites around the state have been chosen by the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection and Audubon Connecticut as areas where birds are in the greatest need of conservation.

The so-called Important Bird Areas announced Monday include state-owned as well as privately held lands. Landowners can be eligible for grants to promote protection efforts.

The sites span forested areas of towns including Old Lyme, Old Saybrook, Kent, Sharon, and Lakeville.

Audubon Connecticut director Stewart Hudson says the measure will help protect species of global concern such as the Cerulean Warbler, the Saltmarsh Sparrow and the Wood Thrush.
