Governor Malloy's General Assembly address carried live Wednesday
Governor Dannel Malloy will address a joint session of the legislature Wednesday at noon. He is expected to outline new proposals on education reform. Budget deficit reduction ideas are also on tap for the session.
Education reforms, job creation and modernizing Connecticut's liquor laws are some of the top issues state lawmakers will be tackling when they return to the Capitol on Wednesday for the new legislative session.
The three-month-long session will also focus on changes to the second year of the two-year, $40.1 billion state budget enacted last year. In an interview with The Associated Press on Friday, the Democrat said he doesn't expect sizeable changes will be necessary because he believes the state's economy is improving, pointing to job growth last year.
The legislature's minority Republicans, on the other hand, have been raising concerns about a deficit that developed this fiscal year, which ends June 30. They argue that more spending cuts are likely needed, especially after a ratings agency recently downgraded Connecticut's debt.
Other possible issues this session include online gaming, performance standards for all utilities and the minimum wage.
800 AM WLAD will carry the address live.
