New London to investigate incoming superintendent

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) New London's Board of Education has halted the hiring process for its incoming school superintendent and voted to investigate his resume.

Thursday night's votes came amid allegations that 49-year-old Terrence Carter falsely represented himself in numerous documents as having a Ph.D. when he does not have an accredited degree. He is scheduled to receive his doctorate next month from Lesley University in Massachusetts.

Carter, who met with board members privately before Thursday's meeting, says he is not withdrawing from the job and has done nothing wrong.

Board President Margaret Mary Curtin says the investigation should take about a month to complete.

An interim superintendent is expected to be appointed until the investigation is completed.
