Bridgeport Rep. Christina Ayala, Ernest Newton lose in primary

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. (AP) Bridgeport state Rep. Christina Ayala won't be returning to the General Assembly for a second term after some legal problems.

Ayala lost the Democratic primary in the 128th House District Tuesday. Unofficial totals showed Chris Rosario winning with 467 votes. Dennis Bradley was second with 176 votes, while Ayala got 136 and Teresa Davidson received 106. Rosario will face Republican Ethan Book in the November general election.

Ayala was fined $350 for a hit-and-run car accident shortly after winning the 2012 Democratic primary for the House seat. She later got into a fight with her boyfriend and faced domestic violence charges, which were dropped after she completed counseling.

State officials are investigating whether Ayala broke elections laws by using a false address.

Former state senator and convicted felon Ernest Newton II is not returning to the Connecticut General Assembly.

The Bridgeport Democrat lost Tuesday's primary to Bridgeport Board of Education member Andre Baker. Newton was the party's endorsed candidate for a seat in the House of Representatives.

Newton left the state Senate after pleading guilty in 2005 to federal extortion and campaign-finance felonies. He served a five-year prison sentence.

In 2012, Newton first attempted a political comeback, running for his old state Senate seat. But he lost in a three-way primary to then-Rep. Andres Ayala Jr.

Newton pleaded not guilty in 2013 to state charges alleging he filed false documentation to obtain more than $80,000 in public campaign funds for his failed state Senate run. He has denied the charges.
