New London mayor declares water emergency

NEW LONDON, Conn. (AP) New London Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio has declared a state of emergency and says some parts of city could lose water for several days because of a leaking underground water main that workers are rushing to fix.

Finizio says the problem was discovered Thursday morning and sections of the city could run out of water in several hours. He says the city uses about 7 million gallons of water a day, but now is losing water at a rate of 10 million gallons a day.

Finizio says residents and businesses may see their water pressure drop or lose water completely. He says the problem also is affected parts of neighboring Waterford.

The mayor says it could take up to two days to repair the leak.
